    • Prior to World War II, Betty was a window dresser, a profession that she had taught herself. She not only passed the Board of Trade of Commerce examination, but received three first prizes in a competitive contest for which she was chosen to have a display in the 1938 Glasgow, Scotland Exhibition.

      Betty married Robert E. Slay, Jr. on November 22, 1944 while he was a Sergeant in the 131st Army Air Force in London, England. She became one of the first "War Brides" to arrive in Fort Pierce, Florida, along with their five month old son, Robert, in 1946.

      Betty and R. E. owned and operated the Sunrise Dry Cleaners for 35 years and they managed various properties in the area.
