    Notes
    • He grew into manhood in Bayou Is Batre, Alabama and in July 1863, at the age of 19, enlisted in the Confederate Army at Mobile, Alabama. He served in Company B, Second Battalion, Alabama Artillery. Research indicates that this battalion served in or near Mobile and in his pension application John stated his command surrendered in Mobile. He was paroled in May 1865. After the war, he returned to his parents’ home in Bayou La Batre. In the neighboring town of Theodore, he met Mary Summerlin, born 5 March 1853, and they were married 23 April 1874.

On his 1916 pension application for indigent, disabled Confederate soldiers, he states that he lost his sight "by reason of measles and exposure" while enlisted in the Confederate Army. He also states that the only property he owned was a house worth $200.

Before serving in the Confederate Army, he enlisted on October 11, 1861 in "Rabby's Co. Coast Guard" at Bayou LaBatre, Alabama. He was on the muster roll and paid on September 10, 1862.
